The WiFi password gets shared at every family gathering, neighbor visit and house party. Eventually half the zip code has it.

Changing it is a five minute job in your router's settings, and here's exactly where everything is.
Get this ready first
- A device connected to the WiFi (or an Ethernet cable)
- The router admin password, usually on the router's sticker
Here's how it works
1. Find your router's address
It's almost always 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Type it into any browser while connected to the network. On Windows, ipconfig shows 'Default Gateway', that's the address. On phone: WiFi settings, tap your network, look at Gateway or Router.
2. Log in
Username and password are on the sticker unless someone changed them. Common defaults: admin/admin, admin/password. If a custom one was forgotten, the reset button story is below.
3. Find the wireless settings
Look for Wireless, WiFi, or WLAN in the menu. There you'll see the network name (SSID) and the Security or Password field.
- Dual band routers show 2.4GHz and 5GHz separately
- Set the same new password on both, or you'll confuse every gadget
4. Choose a strong new password
WPA2 or WPA3 security only (open or WEP are invitations). A good password is long more than clever: three random words and a number beats Xx!3 short strings. Write it down before applying.
5. Save and reconnect everything
Apply or Save, and the router drops every device. Reconnect your phone, computers, TV, consoles and smart home gear with the new password. The boring five minutes of the process, but it only happens occasionally.
Small tweaks, big difference
- Do smart TVs and consoles first while you remember, then phones, then smart home gadgets (bulbs reconnect through their apps).
- Change the router ADMIN password too while you're in there. The sticker defaults protect nothing.
- Create a guest network for visitors. Their devices never touch yours and the main password stays private.
