The steps, start to finish
- Inventory what the account touches. List: Gmail, Photos, Drive, YouTube channels, Play Store purchases, saved passwords, contacts, calendar, Android backups, third party logins using 'Sign in with Google'. The account is a web, not a walled garden: map it before cutting anything.
- Export with Google Takeout. takeout.google.com: select what to export (Mail, Photos, Drive, Contacts, Calendar, YouTube history and more), choose archive format and delivery. Large accounts take days to prepare: request it today, delete later this week.
- Migrate what matters. New email address created and announced, contacts imported, photos landing in their new home (importable to other services as albums), Drive files moved to their new drive. Takeout gives you the boxes; unpacking is the real weekend project.
- Update your dependencies BEFORE deleting. Every service where this Gmail is the login or the recovery email gets updated: banking, government portals, subscriptions, social accounts. This is THE skipped step in every horror story: the account deleted while still being the recovery address for things you need.
