  1. Fill and sign forms: your browser already does it. Open the PDF in Edge or Chrome: type into the form fields, use the draw tool for signatures, save a copy. For about 70% of 'edit a PDF' needs, the browser in front of you was always enough.
  2. Edit actual text and images: LibreOffice Draw. The free, offline LibreOffice suite opens PDFs in Draw: click text and edit it, move logos, delete paragraphs. Layouts sometimes shift on fancy documents, so check the result page by page, but for real text edits it's unbeatable at free.
  3. The online Swiss army knives. iLovePDF, Smallpdf and PDF24 handle merging several PDFs into one, splitting pages out, compressing heavy files, rotating upside down scans and converting to Word. Free daily limits cover household use comfortably.
  4. Convert first when edits get heavy. For paragraphs of changes, convert PDF to Word (any of the tools above, or Google Docs: open with, edit, download as PDF again). Round trip keeps reasonable formatting for text heavy documents.
  5. Redact properly, don't just draw over. Drawing a black box over text with a pen tool does NOT redact: copy-paste still lifts the secret text beneath. Real redaction tools (PDF24, Acrobat) burn the content out permanently: always test by copying the blacked out area afterward.
  6. Respect the privacy of your documents. Online tools upload your file to their servers: tax forms, contracts and medical anything belong in OFFLINE tools like LibreOffice or PDF24's downloadable app. The free price should never include your data as the souvenir.
