The how to part
- Understand why they fail. Motorcycles sip power when parked (clocks, alarms, ECUs) and a small battery sips itself empty in a month or two. Every deep discharge scars the battery permanently. The enemy is sitting, not riding.
- Hook up a tender for anything over two weeks. Connect red to plus, black to minus, plug into the wall. Smart tenders float the battery at perfect charge, you can't overcharge with one. This is the whole trick.
- Buy a pigtail connector that stays on the bike, plugging in takes ten seconds
- Tender, not trickle charger: old dumb tricklers can overcharge
- Charge it BEFORE storage, not after. A battery stored full survives winter far better than one stored empty. Hook the tender the day you park it for the season, not in spring.
- If the bike must sleep outside or unplugged. Pull the battery out, store it indoors off bare concrete (a wood shelf is fine), and top it up once a month with the tender. Yes, the concrete thing is mostly a myth with modern cases, but cold floors don't help.
- Spring wakeup check. Before the first start: voltage above about 12.6 V resting is a healthy battery. From 12.0 down it's tired, below 11.8 and it's likely done. Load test at a parts store if in doubt, it's usually free.

- Alarm systems and GPS trackers double the drain: tender non negotiable with them.
- Riding weekly for 30 plus minutes keeps a battery happier than any gadget.
- When the battery finally dies, match the cold cranking amps (CCA) from the old one's label.

- Jump starting a bike from a RUNNING car can fry small electronics with voltage spikes. Car off, cables on, or use a jump pack.
- Letting a battery sit fully dead over a winter is what actually kills most of them.
