Common mistakes, and how to dodge them

  • Skipping the iMessage deactivation is the classic week one disaster: friends' texts stall because Apple still thinks you own an iPhone.
  • Wiping the old phone on day one: the overlap week costs nothing and saves accounts with no recovery options.

Doing it properly

  1. Prep the iPhone side first. Update iOS, back up to iCloud (Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup, Back Up Now), and turn OFF iMessage and FaceTime in Settings, Apps. That last step matters: texts from iPhone friends can vanish into the Apple void otherwise.
  2. Start the Android and connect the cable. During initial setup, the Android says 'copy your data'. Plug a Lightning/USB-C to USB-C cable between the phones, or use WiFi when prompted. The 'Switch to Android' flow walks the iPhone through what it may share.

  5. Move music and passwords. Spotify just follows your account login. Apple Music has an Android app too. For passwords, iCloud Keychain exports via a Mac, or most people simply let each login reset on first use, less painful than it sounds.

  • Group chats mostly survive the switch, but re-add yourself to pinned iMessage groups from the new phone.
  • Apple Watch doesn't pair with Android: unpair it before wiping the iPhone or it stays locked to an account.
  • Photos in 'Shared Albums' need manual saving; they don't ride along automatically.
