In short: A $52,000 salary sounds abstract until you divide it into hours: at 40 hours a week it is exactly $25 an hour. That conversion is the fastest way to compare a salaried offer against hourly work, freelance rates, or your own overtime.

Enter the annual salary with your real hours per week and weeks per year; the tool returns the hourly, daily, weekly and monthly equivalents.

The conversion, done right
The formula is salary divided by (hours per week x weeks per year). The defaults, 40 hours and 52 weeks, assume vacation is paid; if you take unpaid time, use 50 weeks and watch the hourly number rise.
Example: $70,000 at 40 hours and 52 weeks works out to $33.65/hour, about $1,346 per week and $5,833 per month before taxes. The same salary at 45 real hours drops to $29.91/hour, which is the number nobody negotiates on.
For the reverse trip, multiply your hourly rate by 2,080 (40 x 52) for a full-time annual estimate: $30/hour is $62,400 a year. Contract rates need a cushion for self-paid benefits, so freelancers typically add 25-30 percent.
Worth remembering
- Compare total compensation, not base: insurance, retirement match and paid leave can swing 20-30 percent between two offers with the same salary.
- If you routinely work unpaid overtime, compute your effective rate with real hours once. It changes how attractive that salary actually is.
Frequently asked
Is this before or after taxes?
Before taxes, like salaries are quoted. Take-home depends on your country, state and deductions; in the US a rough take-home estimate is 75-80 percent of these figures.
How do I convert a monthly salary?
Multiply by 12 to get annual, then use the calculator. If the monthly figure is net (after tax), you will need the gross from your payslip for a fair comparison.
