Google Photos quietly became the memory-keeper of hundreds of millions of phones, and quietly filled up: 'storage full' warnings now collide with years of everything-backed-up defaults.

The steps, start to finish
1. Run the storage estimator first
photos.google.com, Settings (gear), 'backup' and storage sections show what's eating space: usually the big three are huge videos, screenshots, and WhatsApp or Messenger auto-saves. Knowing the villain picks the correct weapon.
2. Use the built-in cleanup tools
Photos, Manage storage: it offers review cards for large videos, blurry shots, and screenshots, mass-deletion with preview, and 'Free up space' to remove device copies already backed up. Ten minutes here routinely recovers 10 to 40 GB.
3. Search with real sentences
The search box understands people, places, things and text inside images: 'receipts from March', 'mom at the beach', 'whiteboard'. Face grouping (Settings, Group similar faces) names people once and finds them forever, including in old uploads.
4. Share properly: partner and albums
Partner Sharing (Settings, Partner sharing) auto-shares your library filtered by person or start date with a spouse, set it once, never text baby photos again. For events, shared albums let everyone contribute in two directions.
5. Lock the things not for the cloud
Locked Folder (or the newer Locked space) keeps chosen photos on-device, out of the cloud and out of your main feed: ID photos, documents, surprises. Move sensitive shots there instead of deleting your life into order.
6. Protect the archive from disaster
Backups syncing is step one; step two is an occasional Google Takeout export to a drive you own (see our Takeout guide). Cloud convenience plus your own copy is what 'safe' actually means.
Pro tips without the attitude
- Memories and the year rewind are algorithmic delights: favorite the moments it finds to steer future ones.
- Archived photos (Swipe, Archive) leave the main feed but stay searchable: perfect for documents and parking-spot photos.
- The on-device 'Free up space' is safe only after backup verification, spot-check the cloud copies once before running it the first time.
