How to Back Up Your Android Phone Completely (Photos, Chats, Apps, Everything)

Phones get lost, drowned and dropped at the worst possible moments. A complete backup turns any of those disasters into a 30 minute inconvenience.

Updated August 09, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.

Android's backup system is powerful but scattered across three apps. Here's how to assemble total protection, then verify it actually works.

Short version: Turn on Google One device backup first, then photos and videos: choose your guardian. Details below.

Doing it properly

  1. Turn on Google One device backup. Settings, Google, Backup (or search Settings for 'backup'). Switch it on: apps, call history, settings and SMS all copy to your Google account automatically when charging on WiFi. Tap 'Back up now' for the first full run.
  2. Photos and videos: choose your guardian. Google Photos, profile icon, Backup on. Pick Storage saver for the free 15 GB stretch or Original if you pay for space. This is the piece everyone regrets skipping.
  3. WhatsApp needs its own backup too. WhatsApp, Settings, Chats, Chat backup, Back up to Google Drive, choose Daily. Chats live in WhatsApp's own vault, separate from the phone backup, and they're the thing people miss most after a phone loss.
  4. Confirm what's actually protected. Back in Settings, Google, Backup, the 'Backup details' list shows the last timestamp of each item. Dates today or yesterday mean the pipeline works; ancient dates mean tap 'Back up now'.
  5. Passwords and authenticators, handled separately. Your Google Password Manager syncs logins automatically with the account. For authenticator apps, enable their own cloud backup (Google Authenticator syncs to your account now, Authy has its own): 2FA codes are the classic thing that dies with the phone.
  6. The verification ritual. Once a year: sign into a browser, check photos.google.com shows yesterday's shots, drive.google.com shows the WhatsApp backup file. Two minutes of proof beats years of assumptions.

A few things worth knowing

  • Samsung owners get a second safety net: Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch PC backups complement Google's, belt and suspenders.
  • Big local files (downloads, voice recordings) aren't covered: drag them to Drive or a computer occasionally.
  • New phone day becomes magical: sign in, pick the backup, and your apps and layout rebuild themselves.

Questions people ask

Does it restore to a different brand of phone?
Yes: Google backup restores across brands (Pixel backup to a Samsung, no problem). Brand specific extras stay behind, but all the essentials travel.

Is my data safe in Google's storage?
Backups are encrypted in transit and at rest, and two step verification on your account is the lock that matters most. Enable it.
