Subscription audits are healthy, and YouTube Premium sometimes lands on the 'do I use this enough' list. Canceling takes ninety seconds when you know where the button hides.
Updated August 09, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.
Good news: you keep the perks until the last paid day, and all your data outlives the subscription. Here's the exact path on every device.

Where people go wrong
- Deleting the app doesn't cancel subscriptions: the app stores all hold your recurring payments separately from app icons.
- Beware lookalike 'cancel subscription' websites: only youtube.com and your platform's official subscription pages ever ask for your account.
The how to part
- Cancel on desktop (the reliable way). Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships while signed in. Click Manage membership, then Deactivate, and continue through the 'are you sure' flow to the final confirmation. Bookmark this page: subscriptions live here, not in the app's settings maze.
- Cancel from the phone app. YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Purchases and memberships, Premium, Deactivate. Same destination, app shaped.
- iPhone users who subscribed via Apple: different door. If the charge appears on your Apple receipt, cancel through iPhone Settings, your name, Subscriptions, YouTube Premium. The YouTube website can't cancel Apple billed subs, and vice versa.
- Pause instead of cancel (the middle option). The same manage page offers pausing for 1 to 6 months in most regions. Billing stops, your account remembers everything, and it resumes automatically or when you say so.
- What you keep and when it ends. All benefits continue until the end of the current billing period, nothing dies instantly. Your watch history, playlists and subscriptions are account level data, forever independent of Premium.
- What actually ends. Downloads vanish from devices at the billing end, background play stops, ads return, and YouTube Music Premium reverts to the free tier. Watch Later and playlists survive untouched.

Small tweaks, big difference
- Screenshot the confirmation email: billing disputes are rare, cheap to insure against.
- Family plan members: cancellation by the manager affects everyone, talk at dinner first.
- Annual plan cancellations refund under specific recent-charge windows only: check your billing date before assuming.
Before you ask
Will I be charged again after canceling?
No renewals happen after a confirmed cancellation. An already paid period simply plays out to its end date.
Any retention deal for staying?
YouTube sometimes offers discounted months during the cancellation flow: if the pause-or-stay offer appears, decide with your actual usage numbers in mind.

One last thing
Manage page, deactivate, perks until period's end. The subscription tools stay yours to reactivate whenever ads get loud again.
