How to Edit Videos in Canva (Fast Social Content Without Learning an Editor)

CapCut intimidate you? Premiere costs what it costs? For social-ready videos, Canva's editor is genuinely good enough, hiding right inside the tool you already use.

Updated August 09, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.

Trim, layer, caption, export: the 80% of editing most creators actually need, done in a browser tab. Here's your first session walkthrough.

Before you start

  • A Canva account (free tier handles it)
  • Clips or photos from your phone

The steps, start to finish

1. Start at the right size

Create a design, search 'Video' and pick your format: 1080x1920 for Reels/TikTok/Shorts, 1920x1080 for YouTube. Right sized canvases mean exports that never end up letterboxed or blurry.

2. Import everything into the project

Uploads panel, drag your clips and photos in. Canva stores them for the project and any future one: build a little media library per topic/content series as you go.

3. The timeline: simple and sufficient

Drag clips onto the timeline, trim by dragging edges, split with the S key, reorder by dragging. No track management degree: the timeline works like your instincts say it should.

4. Add text and on screen captions

Text tab, type headlines, animate them in one click (Pop, Fade, Typewriter). Captions: the auto caption feature (paid tier in some regions, manual otherwise, bearing in mind short clips take minutes even by hand) makes silent scrolling watchable.

5. Polish with transitions and music

Between clips, click the plus for a transition (keep them consistent, one style per video). Audio tab: Canva's library of free tracks sorts by mood, lower the volume under any talking to about 20%.

6. Export smart

Download, MP4 Video, highest quality, then upload direct to each platform (never resharing the platform's own compressed upload twice). The brand kit colors sitting in your design already make it match your other posts.

Good habits to keep

  • Templates save lives here too: search video templates for your format and remake their structure with your footage.
  • The Beat Sync feature auto cuts photos/clips to music timing: slick montages in two clicks.
  • Crop every landscape clip to vertical deliberately (fill, don't fit): black bars read as amateur instantly.
