- Save your favorite videos manually. The data download doesn't include clean copies of everything the way you'd expect. Your own posted videos: save them to the phone from the app before leaving (your profile, each video, share, save). Others': their creators may appreciate that you asked.
- Deactivate versus delete: the difference. Deactivation hides the account temporarily while keeping the option to return. Deletion starts a 30 day countdown: log back in within 30 days and everything restores automatically, past that it's permanent.
The thorough version
- Run the actual deletion. Settings and privacy, Account, Deactivate or delete account, Delete account permanently. TikTok verifies your identity (password or code to your email/phone), explains the 30 day window, and schedules the end.
- Survive the 30 day window. Delete the app from the phone during the countdown: accidental logins cancel the whole deletion, and muscle memory is strong. Treat the app as radioactive for a month.
- What happens to your videos, comments and messages. Public content disappears from others' feeds after deletion completes. Messages you sent may linger in others' inboxes (deletion doesn't recall delivered mail), and duets/stitches others made from your content can persist beyond your account.
Common mistakes, and how to dodge them
- The 30 day grace period is also the trap: one weak moment logs you back in and resets everything to active.
- Expecting every trace to vanish: cached copies on search engines and other's saved copies of your duets outlive the account, adjust expectations accordingly.

- Change your username BEFORE deleting if you want to reuse it later for a fresh start: names attached to deleted accounts free up slowly and unpredictably.
- Liked a thousand videos to bookmark them? Screenshot your watch history summary or save favorites to the phone if they matter.
- Tell close friends before the exit: 'where did you go?' messages arrive anyway, but on channels you still check.
