- Export from Chrome. Click the three dot menu, Bookmarks and lists, Bookmark manager. Then the three dot menu inside the manager page and Export bookmarks. Chrome saves one HTML file with everything, folders included.
- Or go straight to the page. Type chrome://bookmarks in the address bar, then the three dot menu top right, Export. Two clicks less.

The thorough version
- Import into Chrome on the other machine. Same menu, Import bookmarks, choose the HTML file. Chrome drops everything into an 'Imported' folder: drag it out to the bookmarks bar and the layout is back.
- Import into Firefox, Edge or Safari. Every major browser has Import from HTML file in its settings or bookmarks manager. The same Chrome file just works, because the format is decades old and universal.
- The ongoing way: sync instead. Sign into Chrome with your Google account and turn on Sync for bookmarks. Every computer you sign into shares the same set live, so manual exports become your backup, not your routine.
Common mistakes, and how to dodge them
- The HTML export is readable by anyone who opens the file. Don't leave it in a shared folder.
- Sync is not backup: delete a bookmark while online and it vanishes everywhere. That's what the yearly export is for.
Small tweaks, big difference
- Keep one export per year in cloud storage. Zero effort, real insurance.
- Importing creates duplicate folders if you do it twice; clean the duplicates before dragging things around.
- Passwords have their own export, a separate file under Passwords in Settings, treat that one with extra care.
