Random full screen ads on your home screen, ads over other apps, 'your phone is infected' screamers: that's not how Android is supposed to behave.

Step by step
1. Find the culprit via recent apps
When a popup appears, DON'T close it. Open the Recent Apps view immediately: the app's name sits at the top of the card. There's your offender, caught red handed.
2. Sort installed apps by recency
Settings, Apps, sort by install date. Popup plagues almost always begin right after something new was installed: the free wallpaper pack, the flashlight, the 'cleaner', the knock off game. Remove the recent suspects first.
3. Strip 'display over other apps' permission
Settings, Apps, Special app access, Display over other apps. Legitimate uses are rare (chat bubbles, screen filters); revoke everything else. Full screen hijack ads die at exactly this switch.
4. Silence abusive website notifications
Chrome, three dots, Settings, Notifications: sites listed here can push fake 'virus alert' ads anytime. Remove every site you don't genuinely want pinging you, that list is often a rogues gallery of nonsense.
5. Sweep with Play Protect and a scanner
Play Store, profile, Play Protect, Scan. Then a Malwarebytes pass from the Play Store for good measure. Adware that survives manual removal rarely survives both.
6. Prevention: the trusted sources diet
Play Store only for apps, read one star reviews before installing freebies of any kind, and decline notification permission by default when websites ask. The plague doesn't return when its routes close.
Pro tips without the attitude
- Icon hidden apps: some adware hides its launcher icon, but every app still appears in Settings, Apps with its real name.
- An ad on the LOCK screen usually comes from 'lock screen magazines' or battery saver apps you didn't know you had: same removal drill.
- Keep 'Install unknown apps' turned off for every app that is not your browser or file manager, and even those, only when needed.
