Microsoft's yearly Windows 11 update keeps arriving as a quiet enablement package: small download, quick restart, and a handful of features that most people never notice.
Updated August 12, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.
Here's what's genuinely useful in the current version, how to check if you have it, and the five settings to touch after updating.
What you'll need
- A Windows 11 PC
- Ten minutes in Settings and Windows Update

How to do it
1. Check your version first
Press Windows+R, type winver, Enter. The dialog shows your exact build and version (24H2, 25H2...). If you're behind, Settings, Windows Update, Check for updates offers the jump; enablement updates install like a monthly patch, no hour-long upgrade.
2. Start menu, redesigned way
The newer Start menu builds a single scrollable page with category views of your apps. Right-click the taskbar, Taskbar settings and Start settings to choose the layout you prefer: more pins or more recommendations killed off entirely is an option now.
3. Copilot where it helps
Copilot lives docked or as an app and can now read the screen when you allow it: 'explain this error message' with a window open finally works. Settings, Privacy, find the Copilot permissions and decide how much screen access you're comfortable granting.
4. File Explorer tabs and the address bar
Explorer keeps gaining browser behaviors: drag a tab out to a new window, duplicate tabs, and the Home view pins your actual frequent folders better than before. If Explorer feels slow, clear its history in Folder Options, General: an old cache is the usual culprit.
5. Phone Link grew up
The Phone Link app now mirrors notifications, messages and photos from Android and iPhone with far less setup friction than the old versions. Pair once with the QR code and answering texts from the PC becomes permanent muscle memory.
6. Energy and AI controls worth setting
Settings, System, Power and battery: the updated energy recommendations page lists your exact savings per toggle. Laptops especially: enable energy saver at 20 percent and check the per-app usage list for the one process eating your battery life.

Pro tips without the attitude
- Feature updates arrive gradually: if Windows Update offers it, take it, and if not, the Update Assistant on Microsoft's site upgrades you safely the same day.
- After any feature update, rerun your privacy settings review once: new toggles occasionally appear with defaults you didn't choose.
- Win+R, 'ms-settings:windowsupdate' jumps straight to updates, worth memorizing.
