Do Not Disturb grew into Focus modes, and Focus modes are quietly the best mental-health feature on the iPhone: work mode that hides social apps, sleep mode that only lets family through, gym mode with just music.
Updated August 12, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.
Setup takes fifteen minutes once. Here's the complete system, from first Focus to automatic schedules that run your day.

Common mistakes, and how to dodge them
- Allow-listing your boss's entire app instead of the person: per-contact rules beat per-app rules for must-reach people.
- Making an 'everything blocked' vacation Focus but forgetting repeat callers and the school: vacations end in panic otherwise.
The how to part
- Create your first Focus. Settings, Focus, tap the plus. Start with Personal or Work. The wizard asks two questions: who can reach you while it's on, and which apps can notify. Everything else waits silently for later.
- Choose allowed people precisely. Pick the specific contacts whose calls and texts break through: partner, kids, parents. Everyone else queues silently. Emergencies still work: repeated calls from anyone within three minutes ring anyway, unless you disable that.
- Curate allowed apps brutally. The trap is allowing too much. Work Focus with only calendar, mail and chat pings; Personal Focus with phone, messages and cameras. Each app you exclude is attention returned. Badges on icons can be hidden per Focus too.
- Automate with schedules and triggers. Inside each Focus, Add Schedule: by time (work 9 to 5), by location (gym arrives, gym starts), or by app (opening the reading app enables Reading). A Work Focus tied to arriving at the office beats every alarm.
- Customize screens per Focus. Long-press the lock screen, link a wallpaper to a Focus: switching to Work can show a plain dark wallpaper and a home screen page with only work apps. The phone visually changes rooms with your mind.
- Share status and break glass politely. Focus Status tells iMessage contacts you have notifications silenced, with an option for them to break through if urgent. Turn it on: people self-censor trivia and genuinely urgent things still find you.

Tips that actually help
- Focus filters go deeper in current iOS: Mail can show only work accounts during Work Focus, and Calendar only certain calendars, set them inside the Focus settings.
- Driving Focus scans for motion automatically: enable its auto-reply and the highway stays quiet.
- Sleep Focus links with the Health app's sleep schedule; set it once and late-night pings stop permanently.
Before you ask
Do Focus modes sync to my iPad and Mac?
Yes, with the same Apple ID they mirror across devices instantly; silencing the phone silences the desk too.
Will alarms still ring during a Focus?
Alarms and timers from the Clock app always break through every Focus mode, including Sleep. Only notifications get filtered.
