- The official global switch. Profile, three line menu, then Messages and story replies (wording varies slightly by version). Look for 'Show read receipts' and toggle it off: every chat stops reporting 'Seen' from your account.
- Per conversation control. Open a chat, tap the person's name at the top, and find the read receipts toggle for that thread alone. Ideal when you want receipts with your partner and privacy with everyone else.
- Turn them off for everyone, keep them for yourself. Both directions respect your choice: you still receive receipts FROM others (they show whether YOUR messages were seen), but your own reading becomes invisible. The asymmetry is intentional and legal in the app's logic.
- Alternative: airplane mode for the stubborn versions. On older app versions without the toggle: airplane mode on, read the message, close the app completely, airplane mode off. Works, but the official switch exists now, use it instead.
Pro tips without the attitude
- Restricting an account also moves their messages to requests with no receipts at all: useful distance for half-strangers.
- Read receipts affect trust in close relationships quietly: a heads-up chat about it saves misunderstandings.
- Vanish mode chats are different: ephemeral messages show everything and screenshot alerts fire, don't confuse the two.
What trips people up
- Turning receipts off doesn't hide active status: 'Active now' in chats is a separate setting (Activity status) needing its own toggle.
- Assuming it syncs instantly everywhere: app updates roll out settings gradually, and the desktop web version sometimes lags the phone app.
