It's WhatsApp-sized on the surface with superpowers underneath: public channels, giant groups, real multi-device sync, file sharing without silly limits. Twenty minutes and you're fluent.
The fast version
- Set up with privacy tuned from minute one. Register with your number, then immediately: Settings, Privacy and Security. Phone number visibility: change from Everybody to My Contacts (or Nobody), same for Last Seen and Profile Photo. Two minutes that block most strangers from learning your digits.
- Understand the vocabulary. Chats are one to one (with optional end to end encrypted 'Secret Chats'), Groups hold up to 200,000 members (yes, really), and Channels are one to many broadcast feeds you subscribe to: news outlets, creators, deal alerts, city updates.
- Find channels worth your time. The search bar finds public channels by topic ('tech news', your city name, your hobby). Subscribe selectively: channels deliver a feed without replies, and twenty subscriptions become noise fast. Five great channels beat thirty random ones.
The thorough version
- Multi device the right way. Telegram on desktop, tablet and web all sync independently without your phone being online (unlike WhatsApp's linked devices model that phones-home occasionally). Sign in anywhere with the code: the laptop experience is excellent.
- The features power users actually use. Saved Messages (a personal cloud notepad for links, files, drafts), file sending up to 2 GB per file (videos, software, whole folders), scheduled messages (long press send), silent messages, message editing after sending, and folders to sort work/family/channels into tabs.
- Storage sanity with the cache controls. Telegram downloads media greedily: Settings, Data and Storage, Storage Usage, set Keep Media to weeks or months: old files purge automatically from the phone but stay downloadable from the cloud, infinite library, zero phone pressure.
Pitfalls worth skipping
- Public groups and channels include scam corners: crypto 'support' DMs and giveaway channels are predators wearing logos, verify obsessively.
- Cloud chats (the default) are not end to end encrypted by design choice: use Secret Chats for anything deserving that standard.
Small tweaks, big difference
- Usernames let people find you without a phone number: set one in Settings and share @yourname like an address.
- Secret Chats for the sensitive stuff: end to end encrypted, device locked, screenshot alerts, self destruct timers available.
- Mute aggressively: any group can be muted forever with a long press, the unread badge sanity saver.
