How to Refund a Game on Steam (The 2-Hour Rule and Every Exception)

Bought a game that won't launch, runs at 12 fps, or just isn't what the trailer promised? Steam has a famously fair refund policy most players never fully use.

Updated August 09, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.

Under 2 hours played and 14 days owned: almost guaranteed. Outside both: possible with a good reason. Here's the whole system.

Before you start

  • Your Steam account
  • A purchase you regret

Here's how it works

1. The magic numbers to remember

14 days since purchase, less than 2 hours of playtime: refunds are virtually automatic inside this window. Playtime counts actual in game time (Steam tracks it honestly), and yes, idling in the menu counts too.

2. The direct path

help.steampowered.com in any browser (or Steam, Help, Steam Support): find the purchase, click 'I would like a refund', then 'I'd like to request a refund'. Choose refund to Steam Wallet (fast, about a day) or original payment method (up to a week).

3. Write one honest sentence

The form asks why: 'Game won't run on my system' or 'Not as described' suffice. Steam's system is largely automated inside the rules: the box exists for the edge cases, be truthful, don't write an essay.

4. Outside the rules: plead your case anyway

Beyond 2 hours or 14 days, a human reads it. Winning arguments: a game breaking bug (with details), misleading store page versus reality, bought immediately before a bigger discount. Losing arguments: 'I finished it and didn't love it'.

5. DLC, preorders and gifts have their own rules

DLC: 14 days and under 2 hours on top of the base game having under 2 hours combined. Preorders: refundable anytime before release, normal rules after. Gifts: refund before redemption freely, after redemption the recipient must approve it.

6. What happens to the game and your money

Refund approved: the game leaves your library and the money returns where you sent it. Achievements stay, playtime history stays, no black mark exists on your account for reasonable use.

Pro tips without the attitude

  • Timing playtime honestly: launch the broken game for troubleshooting and the clock runs: document fast, refund fast.
  • Bundle refunds work if the TOTAL playtime across the bundle stays under 2 hours, plan trial sessions accordingly.
  • Refund then rebuy on sale is explicitly allowed: Steam itself says rebuying at a lower price shortly after isn't abuse.
