Windows 11 ships with gorgeous animations, background apps and features you never asked for. Reclaiming that horsepower takes 15 minutes.
These tweaks are all safe, reversible and built into the system. No sketchy 'optimizer' apps required.

Pitfalls worth skipping
- Registry 'boost packs' from forums mostly change nothing or break things. Built in switches are where the real gains live.
- Third party 'PC optimizers' are often the heaviest program on the machine, ironic at best.
Step by step
- Audit startup apps. Ctrl + Shift + Esc opens Task Manager, then the Startup apps tab. Disable everything you don't need at boot (Spotify, iTunes helpers, updaters). Boot time drops noticeably after one reboot.
- Kill background app permissions. Settings, Apps, Installed apps, three dots on heavy apps, Advanced options, and set Background app permissions to Never for things like games and shops. They still work when you open them.
- Switch the power mode to Best performance. Settings, System, Power and battery, Power mode. Laptops default to balanced for battery life; on a desk plugged in, Best performance is free speed.
- Turn off visual flourishes. Search 'performance' in Start, 'Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows', and choose Adjust for best performance (or custom, keeping smooth fonts). Fancy animations are exactly where weak GPUs feel old.
- Enable Storage Sense. Settings, System, Storage, Storage Sense. It empties temp files and old downloads automatically so the drive never clogs into slowdown territory.
- SSDs slow down noticeably when past 85% full
- Run a manual cleanup now for immediate effect
- Trim what Defender scans (carefully). Skip this one if unsure. Power users can exclude their big dev folders or video editing caches from real time scanning under Virus and threat protection settings. Speeds up heavy work, slightly lowers the guard in that corner only.
- Update drivers and Windows. Odd slowness is often an old graphics or storage driver. Windows Update, Advanced options, Optional updates holds the driver gold nobody installs.

A few things worth knowing
- Restart weekly: 'fast startup' means shutdowns don't fully reset, restarts do. The oldest advice remains true.
- OneDrive syncing a huge folder over slow connections silently taxes everything; pause during heavy work.
- An SSD upgrade remains the single biggest physical speed boost if you're still on a spinning disk.
Questions people ask
Will these tweaks hurt battery life?
Performance power mode and fewer background apps pull in opposite directions. On battery, choose balanced mode and keep the background trims.
How much faster will it feel?
On a midrange PC, the combination is very noticeable in boot time and app launches. On a strong PC, you'll mainly remove small annoyances.
