New phone, lost phone, flooded phone: WhatsApp chats hold family history, addresses, photos and voice notes people can't replace.
The backup switch takes one minute to set and sighs relief forever. Here's how it works on Android and iPhone, plus transfers between them.
Short version: Switch on the cloud backup first, then decide about videos consciously. Details below.
The steps, start to finish
- Switch on the cloud backup. WhatsApp, Settings, Chats, Chat backup, Back up to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone): set Daily. The phone now backs up automatically overnight while charging on WiFi: one decision, permanent coverage.
- Decide about videos consciously. The 'Include videos' toggle multiplies backup size roughly fivefold: free Google (15 GB shared) and iCloud (5 GB) users may leave videos out or accept a storage plan. Photos stay included either way, usually the important half.
- Encrypt the backup (worth doing). End to end encrypted backup option in the same settings: set a password ONLY for the backup, stored nowhere else. Without it, the chat contents sit readable to the storage provider; with it, lose the password and even you can't open it, write it down.
- Restoring on a new phone: the dance. Same phone number, install WhatsApp, verify the number by SMS. The app finds your cloud backup automatically and offers 'Restore': accept, wait for chats to land, media continues downloading in the background for a while. Same platform moves are truly this smooth.
- iPhone to Android (and back): the official bridge. Supported now both ways: during new phone setup the transfer flows move WhatsApp history with everything else (our switch guides cover it), or use the brand tools (Move to iOS and the manufacturers' transfer apps) that include WhatsApp sections.
- Verify before you trust. After restore: scroll to your oldest important chat, confirm the photos open, play a voice note. Then daily backup cheerfully continues from the new device, no additional step needed.

Pro tips without the attitude
- Chats you can't afford to lose period: export them too (chat, three dots, More, Export chat) as files for the records nobody can touch.
- Large media backups over cellular: restrict to WiFi in settings unless your plan is unlimited, backup gigabytes are patient.
- Multiple Google accounts trap: check WHICH account holds the backup when you're the multi account type, restores find nothing on the wrong account.
Quick answers
Can I read the backup directly?
No: encrypted backups only restore through WhatsApp itself on a phone with the matching number. Export chat is the human readable path instead.
Do backups expire?
Yes: Android backups unused for months may be purged per Google's policy, and iCloud has space pressure. A fresh restore onto any device resets the clock and doubles as verification.
